Damp Vs Timber: A Comprehensive Guide

Timber wood along with all its timber profile is known for its strength and longevity. Nevertheless, despite the strength of the timber, untreated damp can be exceedingly damaging to the timber and can easily result in the extensive and expensive restoration bills. It is necessary that damp must be spotted before installing timber wood in the home.

There are many ways in which damp can affect a timber wood. Damp is generally caused by the increase of water in the whole or a part of the house. Whether it is the internal moisture or the seeping of dampness from outside, damp can be easily caused by both and can result in damaging the timber.

Damp, caused by a various causes like a blocked air brick, missing roof-tile, condensation or drain-pipe. Dampness in timber is often due to one of these three issues:

œ Wood Rot
The principal cause of damp that can be utterly damaging to timber is rot. Wet rot as well as dry rot can easily blossom in moist setting. Rot slowly eats away the timber. This rot results in a loss of strength as well as the weight of the timber.

œ Rising Damp and Penetrating Damp
Rising damp generally occurs when the ground water moves upwards towards the building through the bricks and mortar. While, penetrating damp happens when poor external structures, allows the water to penetrate the structure. Peeling wallpaper, falling of plaster or stained plaster are the signs of penetrating damp.

œ Condensation

Condensation is likely to be caused by humid, damp air from varied household activities concentrating on colder surfaces like walls, windows or ceilings.  Condensation occurs from the water vapours being fashioned inside the home and having nowhere to escape.
Sign of condensation is decayed timer around the windows and door frames. Condensation remedies includes heat, ventilation and fans.

The first and foremost measure to be taken to protect timber is to find the resource of the water and eradicate it. After finding the source, ventilate the area with dehumidifiers, keeping the heat on low. Dehumidifiers reduce moisture and does not let damp to spread.
