Wooden floor has as a character, a charm that
turns a house into a home. While each and every kind of wood cannot be used to
lay a wooden floor, but some wood profiles such as oak and timber can recreate
the magic of a beautiful wooden floor. Wood is an organic material and hence,
it lives and breathes. It continuously contracts and expands depending upon the
environment. A newly laid wooden floor is beautiful nevertheless, even as it
grows old, wood retains its charm that made it beautiful in the first place.
Wooden floor has to be laid down perfectly so
that it would remain faultless and perfect in the decades to come. It is
necessary that an experienced builder be called who can lay down an immaculate timber floor for
your home. Nevertheless, there are a few things that have to be kept in mind
before laying down a new wooden floor.
·
Looking
out for damp
Damp is the one thing that has to
be thoroughly checked before laying a new timber floor. A room should be dry
and the sub floors should also not have any amount of moisture. Moisture can
make the timber floor expand. A hardwood timber floor, soaks up the water
content and expands in order to accommodate it. Similarly, if the air in the
room is humid, it can make the wooden profile of the floor expand or contract
according to the weather.
·
Thorough
checking of Sub-Floors
If an existing timber sub floor
is present, it has to be thoroughly checked before laying a new floor. Checking
has to be done for rot, damp, wood-worm or any small problem. Also make sure
that the existing floor is completely secured down and requires no
refurbishment. Any problem in the existing timber floor can result in a problem
for the new wooden floor.
·
Laying
down of floors
While nailing down a new floor it
has to be kept in mind that if the new floor is being placed on an existing
plywood floor, it has to be nailed down at 90 degrees from the existing floor.
This ensures that the floor has maximum strength. However, if the timber floor
has to be placed in the same direction as the existing floor, make sure that
the present floor is securely nailed down.
·
Additional
Precautions
Additional precautions have to be
taken care of when the present floor is that of concrete or screed. Concrete
has substantial quantity of moisture in it. Water makes concrete strong and
durable, while the same moisture content weakens the wood. It is important that
you leave concrete to dry for a long time. It may feel and look dry, but it can
have a good quantity of moisture content. A moisture reading meter should be
used to read the content of moisture in the cement.
With all the timber wood flooring, make sure that
you leave an expansion gap around the edge to ensure that if there is some
expansion, the wood would not get splintered. This space can be covered by
various timber profiles such as beading, skirting cladding and various other timber
profiles.
